AFHU invites you to
One Year Later: The Hebrew University & the Israel-Hamas War
Tuesday, October 22, 2024
7:30 – 9:00 PM
Washington, D.C. (Address provided upon RSVP)

In the months following October 7th, the Hebrew University found itself with over 35% of its 28,000-member campus community sent to the reserves, housing thousands of displaced people and providing emergency services to students, faculty, their families, and more. The Hebrew University now finds itself faced with another challenge: academic boycotts and intellectual isolation, as the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement (BDS) has gained strength across the globe. Please join us for lunch/dessert in the sukkah with Rector Tamir Sheafer of the Hebrew University, where he will share updates on the Hebrew University since October 7th, the evolution of academic boycotts and intellectual isolation on Israeli universities, and how the Hebrew University is meeting these challenges as it approaches its centennial year in 2025.

Rothberg International School and Hebrew University alumni are strongly encouraged to attend. Please RSVP below by Tuesday, October 15. Please contact Gabby Sherb, Executive Director, Mid-Atlantic Region, at [email protected] or 202.803.8202 for additional information.

In 2025, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem will celebrate its centennial: “Celebrating Our Heritage, Building Our Future.” The Centennial will recognize the Hebrew University’s 100-year commitment to excellence, Zionism and patriotism, multidisciplinary integration, societal impact, innovation, and entrepreneurship, as well as diversity and inclusion. Professor Tamir Sheafer began as Hebrew University’s rector in 2022. From 2016 to 2022, Sheafer served as the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at HU. Over the past two decades, Sheafer has led several international research groups to study the impact of political systems and the strength of democracy on a country’s political processes and communications. Sheafer has helmed the University’s digital political communication research laboratory, developing new methods for automated textual analysis of political narratives based on deep learning models. Under his leadership as dean, the Faculty of Social Sciences gained international status among first-rate scholars and outstanding students.
