I know of no public event which has given me such delight as the proposal to establish a Hebrew University in Jerusalem.”
Albert Einstein, April 1921

In March, on Pi Day (March 14)—a global celebration of the mathematical constant π—we also honor and remember Albert Einstein, one of history’s greatest minds. Born on this day, Einstein was not only a scientific luminary but also a founding father of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU).

For Einstein, the University represented both his commitment to his Jewish identity and his belief in universal values—truth, knowledge, and respect for humanity. He played an integral role in shaping the institution, serving on its first Board of Governors and Academic Council and even traveling to fundraise for its development. He delivered Hebrew University’s inaugural scientific lecture and edited its first collection of scientific papers. His deep connection to the University became permanent when he bequeathed his literary estate and personal papers to HU in his will.

Today, the Albert Einstein Archives, housed at HU, offer a remarkable window into his life and legacy. The collection includes scientific and nonscientific writings, personal photographs, books, and essays, along with his famous E = mc² formula. Beyond science, the archives serve as a valuable resource for Jewish, German, European, and American intellectual history, as well as the early history of Zionism.
